Episode 3 - linkedIn and Xing

So the next thing I did was to take a look at two dear old buddies XING formerly known as OpenBC and LinkedIn two business community platforms. First I visited XING.

XING makes your professional network an active part of your life. Far more than a directory of business contacts, XING enables its members to discover professional people, opportunities and privileges through its unique discovery capability and advanced contact management tools. Its novel approach to professional services has resulted in OPEN Business Club AG being named one of the world’s hottest Web 2.0 startups by Business 2.0/CNN Money and one of Europe’s “Top 100” by Red Herring.

Maybe regarding XING I’m a little of a patriot but I love this platform! (maybe cause it was built in Germany :) I yet have to familiarize myself with the new GUI.
I don’t know about the US or UK but the coverage in Germany is pretty good and the platform is widely used by human resource companies.

On to the big international platform LinkedIn. I’ve signed up with them quite while ago but never really spent enough time on it to make myself familiar with this platform.

Guy Kawasaki very recently had a post on his blog about LinkedIn. Let me quote him on something.

Increase your visibility.By adding connections, you increase the likelihood that people will see your profile first when they’re searching for someone to hire or do business with. In addition to appearing at the top of search results (which is a major plus if you’re one of the 52,000 product managers on LinkedIn), people would much rather work with people who their friends know and trust.

So I brushed my profile up a little and played around with all the features. There is a brand new feature Answers a Q&A platform within LinkedIn. This adds quite some interactivity to the topic - we will see how this feature will do over time.

So anybody out there feel free to contact me for:
getting back in touch, career opportunities, consulting offers, new ventures, job inquiries, expertise requests, business deals, reference request

See you on XING and LinkedIn :)

Linkedin is pretty cool, the best thing about the new answers service is that it lists the questions according to what you have in your profile. This sort of automated data mining from your profile and put to use in listing the questions that you might know is truely awesome!

      Hey Phil,
agree, thats some clever use of this data. However i found the http://www.xing.com site somehow more interactive or lively. I guess the images provide more “taste and smell” but thats just me …

[...] This will and has already changed the way we look for person specific information.  I for myself keep track of the things going on with people I professionally know through linkedin and xing (a German based linked). I’ve only recently started to build a profile on Facebook and am still amazed how many of the people I know are on there - and not only the ones working in the industry. [...]
