The next stop in my roundtrip through social web was StumbleUpon.
This application and the community behind it is awesome fun – however quite time consumpting and I have yet to figure out if it can be useful on a day by day basis. (not sure if Web2.0 can/should be measured on usefulness)
The basic principle is easy to explain. You are led to web pages matching your areas of interest on a more or less random basis. More or less cause
- The users can vote for sites and say like or dislike and hopefully this influences the likeliness of a page appearing again
- There is advertising. And as the advertising is not banners or adverts but just the companies web pages appearing more frequently this has an impact on the likelihood of appearance. However a great idea cause advertising does not really anoy as much as popup banners etc. do
StumbleUpon for me has a traffic factor of 7 out of 10
And a social/viral factor of 8 out of 10 (was like listening to mixed tapes you never know whats up next
The fun factor was 6 out of 10
I missed a couple of features to increase the viral part of the game.
You can make a load of friends on StumbleUpon and one observation I made during the whole jurney is that the WWW happens to be quite a tiny place as you meet a couple of guys/girls in any of the places I visited.(It’s so about time to get identity 2.0)
I liked StumbleUpon a lot and will return once in a while…when I’m bored.
