Nearbies at Nearbie -not only history connects us

Browsing through my daily chunk of RSS my attention was drawn to a most recent article of Pete Cashmore over at mashable.com

- Nearbie - Social Networking Through Time - why? Well honestly mostly just because nearbie sounded very familiar to me, as I have a domain called nearbies.com since quite a while to play around with stuff.

So I went there and signed up and played around a bit, cause I liked the idea and one could imagine that you could spend some time surfing there once you’re hooked up by the theme. I will need more time to make up my mind and do a proper review about this new site - but you have to love the name :D and its unique approach.

btw. If someone from nearbie should read this - I failed to delete a picture I’ve uploaded - could someone tell me howto? thx

- update: Thanks Dean! for looking into this ;)

Thanks for the kind words Frank. I knew I should have grabbed “Nearbies.com” when I had the chance. :)
We’ll get the image for Sunnyvale changed to something a bit more appropriate, and fix the source of the issue that prevented you from being able to make changes directly.
Check Nearbie often as we are rolling out improvements daily. Keep in touch.

      Hey Dean,

Will most definetely check the progress of nearbie.com / not only as a result of typos while trying to get to nearbies.com ;)

Was thinking that it would be fab to connect the nearbie approach with a mobile application, GPRS info, geo tagged images and instant blogging … the sky is the limit :)

But I guess you guys have loads of great ideas anyway and the hard bit is to choose the right ones to invest your time and money in and implement them - right?

Two things I learned re social local apps:

      1. be differentiated - and DON’T TRY TO BE EVERYTHING / over time that’s a tough one believe me

      2. either try to conquer the whole world at once or stay in your area / district cause it seems its very very hard to expand a very local Bay Area Idea to the whole country or even the whole world.

Only downside is that you guys should have used the Yahoo! Maps API …

I wish you guys all the best and will keep in touch ;)
