Awesome comparison done by Klaus Komenda a Yahoo! web developer.

You wouldn’t expect something useful and insightful like this of someone from AUSTRIA :D

Really if you think about building an online application for which you need to use a maps API, go read his article to make an educated decision.

  • Google using expandable Map with Yahoo! Maps listings – confused
  • YAHOO! Maps out of Beta – covering Europe too
  • Yahoo! Map Mixer – Hack Days’ are about expressions of creativity
  • Google My Map – Flickr is Good, Yahoo! Video is Bad

He, Frank. What’s that supposed to mean? :-) Oh, you’re gonna bring up that old rivalry again. I am gonna get you back for that :-)

Nevertheless, thanks for the mention, my dear german friend :-)

Well you know how it is… but we will just never ever get over the “Schmach von Córdoba” although obviously this was all just propaganda…

Unfortunately I’ve not found how to get Yahoo’s Local Search API to work in the UK and without that the Google Map with Local wins hands down for me. Yahoo have always been far too US-centric.

      hey doug,

unfortunately the Local API in the UK and all other EU countries is not yet public.
So the reason for you not being able to find it is because there is no – at this moment.

whether or not Yahoo! is too US centric is hard to say – and lately more and more innovation is driven from EU and UK in specific. A lot of Answers features as well as some web search innovations are built in the UK. Thats rather new and 2 years from now there was no big engineering team in EU as we have it today.
