How To - Install iPhone and 3rd Party Applications on your iPod Touch

The iPod Touch is a very neat and shiny gadget and great to watch YouTube movies with on the Go, but it lacks some of the nice applications the iPhone has - now you can’t enable phone capabilities on the iPod Touch…

But as both of the Apple toys work on the same operating system and are in fact very similar when it comes to hardware and software, there is an easy way to add some great new tools to your iPod Touch if you follow the guide below to get applications like iPhone Mail, iPhone Maps, iPhone Weather, iPhone Stocks on your iPod Touch.

Caution: Obviously this is not a Apple approved procedure and I can’t be held responsible and will not take any responsibility should anything go wrong. So everything you do is at your own risk.

First you need to check the firmware version of your iPod Touch.

You can do that on your iPod Touch by clicking on settings > general > about.

There you will see a list item called version the number tells you the firmware version.

Or you go to iTunes on your Mac or PC with the iPod Touch connected and you will see something very similar to this.

Software version gives you the version of the firmware your iPod Touch is running with.

If the version check shows anything else than 1.1.1 you will need to downgrade your firmware in order to install additional applications to your iPod Touch. This is due to the .tiff exploit only working with this very version of the firmware.

To downgrade you will have to follow this little How to.

1. Download the 1.1.1 firmware from Apple by clicking here

2. Connect your iPod Touch to your PC or Mac and click on the restore button while holding down alt (for Mac users)

restore

3. A select file to open interface will show up (see the OS X version as a screenshot) go to the downloaded 1.1.1 firmware file and select it.

selectfirmware

4. Let the update happen - you don’t need to do anything now

5. You should have 1.1.1 firmware on your iPod Touch now - to check follow the above steps.

6. Next thing you need to do is open Safari on your iPod Touch and go to http://jailbreakme.com

7. Click on the button in the very bottom of the page that reads “Install AppSnapp” - this will do the trick and will take you back to the home page

8.
Click on install on the home screen and on the next screen click install (button with a little + icon ) > click on all packages and choose openssh, bsd system and launcher and install them

9. Install whatever you find and like on the list of 3rd party applications onto your iPod Touch

10. To install iPhone applications follow the 7 steps below.

  1. Click on installer
  2. Go to sources and click edit
  3. Next click add and add http://repo.us.to
  4. Then press done and go to install
  5. Choose For iPhone 1.1.1 click on it >> then YOU MUST INSTALL PREPS FIRST (for Mail and Maps)
  6. Then install the rest
  7. You are good to go

You should be able to fully restore your iPod Touch by holding the sleep and home button until your iPod Touch turns off. Keep holding them and eventually the apple logo will appear > now release the sleep button while still holding the home button. If everything went right you should connect to iTunes and it should do a full restore.

I guess you just didn’t point to the right file for the restore (see point 2) I’ve missed that at first and it didn’t downgrade.

I followed your instructions completely but whenever I click restore a program pops up and forces me to download v.1.1.3

      help please

Well it is very important to hold down the alt key on the mac and I assume shift or ctrl on a windows machine.
this will give you a select source interface where you can choose the downloaded 1.1.1.

      hope that helps

I’ve already installed the source (http://repo.us.to) to get the iphone apps into my ipod touch, but it seems this source (or it might be my ipod ¬¬), doesn’t work. Because after adding the source, any application called iphone apps 1.1.1 appears in the installer menu.
So, I would like to know if there’s any other method, source or anything in order to get this apps into my touch
      thanks

Dude, Just download ZiPhone (Latest Ver.) and and run it. It should jailbreak iPod Touch Ver 1.1.4 and without WiFi. As for apps, well that I’m not sure… I think u need WiFi.
