On Yahoo! Local users may now comment on reviews. Quite a neat feature to keep the people enganged and allow people to discuss more directly on the recently relaunched site.

That has been my first impression when I first saw parts of the design a couple of month ago.
 
Very much the opposite of what Google Maps looks like. Google Maps takes a much more pragmatic and technical approach to the Local and Maps topic than Yahoo!’s new Local does.

It’s true that it sort of reminds you a little of the ourcity mashup – at least the header – that was done by Yahoo! India and based on a Yahoo! Hackday project.

The “love to detail” is really stunning.

There are so many little enhancements that make life so much easier. Like the little interaction buttons for every listing hidden in the SRP that only appear if you hover over the listing.

Or the map that can be enlarged within the search result page – formerly you were taken to the Yahoo! maps product. Also the map will follow you scrolling down the listings. Overall the new Yahoo! Maps are integrated so much more smoothly and intuitive that not only the eye is pleased.

Well I’m definitely biased – but I have to say I love it and this is just the path that Yahoo! should go regarding Local. Well done guys!

The brand new Yahoo! Local – Hidden Features

Last week was quite a big week for the Yahoo! Europe Local Search and Maps Team. Not only did we launch the French Local Search.

in the Paris (exile) office. Really great job much appreciated! So now
we have our product in 3 countries – still way to go but a very
important next step.

But not only have we launched local in France, we have launched the Yahoo! maps platform “Galieleo” in The United Kingdom, France and Germany as well. It’s a wonderful product and a fantastic platform Nila has done a great job in managing the teams in the US, and throughout Europe. People in Grenoble, Sunnyvale, London, Dublin, Paris and Munich – people in our engineering, web development, design, marketing, customer care, legal, quality insurance and product management team needed to be steered and catered to make all of this possible. It’s great to see a compelling product like our maps finally on the European Yahoo! sites.
 

We are obviously are using the new maps in our local product as well and there will be even more integration in other Yahoo! properties and as a platform for very nice cooperation like the one with Sony round their Handycam.

Yahoo! Local launched in France & Yahoo! Maps for UK, DE and FR

Last week the local featured listings product was launched in the UK market.

Providing a keyword and location based advertising that enables the advertiser not only with a very detailed targeting on locations and business categories but also with some branding (Logo placement) and the possibility to communicate a promotional tagline alongside with the core contact info like address and phone number.

Yahoo! Local UK Launched New Featured Listings Product

Yahoo! UK and Yahoo! Germany have launched a “second row” of personalized tabs on their homepages yesterday. Including modules for Yahoo! Music, Yahoo! Local Search and Yahoo! Movies.
